The Embodied Minister
Principles and Skills
Course Description:
This 4-unit course provides an in-depth introduction to the theory and practice of the Embodied Ministerial Relationship. From Confessor to Adivsor to Care-Giver to Spiritual Companion, this course charts the four archetypes of the Minister and the somatic counseling skills associated with each archetype. Special emphasis is given to Spiritual Companionship—the art of attending to the movement of Spirit in one's own life and in the lives of others. Students will examine historical and contemporary models of spiritual direction, ground their own spiritual unfolding in the context of soul development, and develop the key somatic skills for holding ministerial sessions.
Drawing on classical contemplative traditions, depth psychology, and interreligious approaches to care, the course emphasizes the development of attuned listening, relational awareness, discernment, and compassionate inquiry as central competencies for those engaged in ministry, counseling, and transformative education. Attention is given to the role of embodiment, transference and counter-transference, boundaries, and the integration of spiritual experience in ordinary life.
Through readings, seminar discussion, guided practice in triads, and supervised reflection, students will cultivate the inner posture and practical skills required to offer competent and ethical spiritual companionship across diverse contexts.
